The pandemic has wreaked havoc on supply chains and thrown off economic forecasts, setting up a shortage of computer chips that is pushing up prices for a host of products

8 August, 2012 - Toshiba to cut flash memory production by 30 percent

Toshiba said it will cut its flash production by 30 percent due to oversupplying the chips that are used in mobile devices and PCs. The “adjustment to production” of NAND flash memory at its Mie Prefecture plant in Japan meant Toshiba will reduce output in a bid to reduce inventory. The move will aim to balance out supply and demand.

“Oversupply of NAND flash memory in the retail market, for application in USB memories and memory cards, has resulted in continual price declines since the beginning of this year,” the company said in a published statement. It came into effect today.

Toshiba remains the world’s second largest maker of NAND flash memory after Samsung.

“Everyone knows that demand has not been as strong as expected,” said Religare senior analyst David Motozo Rubenstein, speaking to Reuters.  Apple stands as Toshiba’s biggest customer, analysts say, with more than half of Toshiba’s memory chip output ending up in Apple’s smartphones. With the impending launch of the iPhone 5 expected in or around October, “you would think they would build a little inventory for that,” he added.

Toshiba believes the prices of NAND flash memory will improve in the current quarter — July to September — as the production of the next-generation smartphone ramps up. Earlier this year, an IHS report said NAND flash memory shipments will rise to 16.8 billion gigabytes by 2015, with the iPad accounting for more than three-quarters of all shipments in 2011.

Dear Valued Customer,

As you know the recent floods in Thailand have dramatically affected people and businesses there, and Seagate is doing what it can to support our local employees and partners.  We have confirmed that all Seagate employees in the region are safe and our production facilities are fully operational, for which we are thankful.

Unfortunately, the catastrophic flooding has had a significant impact on the storage industry supply chains affecting many storage providers, including Seagate. We are monitoring the situation very closely and are working to understand the ultimate impact of this event. We will strive to keep you updated and ask for your patience as we work through a rapidly evolving situation as quickly as we can.

With these new and severe supply constraints, we are adjusting our prices level to reflect current supply  levels. These changes are effective as of October 17, 2011.

We thank you for your partnership and look forward to our continued business together.

Thank you,

Kurt Richarz and Rocky Pimentel

>>Intel G31 chipset shortages to get worse in 4Q09 as Intel cuts back supply
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 7 September 2009]

Supplies of Intel's G31 IGP chipset are expected to become even tighter in the fourth quarter of 2009 as Intel plans to reduce the proportion of the chipsets in its total shipments from 50% in the first quarter, to 25%, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Intel said it could not comment on supply issues, but added it continues to work with the industry to meet demand for its products.

Although Intel hopes motherboard makers will transition to the G41 chipset, motherboard makers are unwilling to adopt the new chipset as its price of US$7 (US$4-5 for first-tier makers) is higher than for the G31.

Intel plans to raise the shipments proportion of the G41 to 25% in the fourth quarter.

The tight supply of G31 chipsets has already caused a supply gap of around 20% in the third quarter and the percentage may reach 50% in the fourth.

First-tier motherboard makers Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology are expected to suffer limited impact from the shortages, while Micro-Star International (MSI), Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and ASRock, which have higher entry-level shipments, will suffer more.
